a. Location:
Tuyen Quang is a mountainous province in the North of Vietnam. It is located between North West and North East of Vietnam, in the latitude of 21o30' N - 22o40 N and in the longitude of 104o53'E - 105o40'E. It borders Ha Giang in the North, Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen in the East, Yen Bai in the West, Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc in the South.
b. Climate and hydrography:
Tuyen Quang has a monsoon tropical climate, with two distinctive seasons: a cold-dry winter and a hot-rainy summer, with mean annual rainfall of 1,295 to 2,266mm, mean temperature of 22-23°C, and mean humidity of 85%.
There are three big rivers running across the province, namely Lo, Gam and Pho Day. The part of Lo River crossing Tuyen Quang has the length of 145 kilometres, with the highest stream-flow of 11,700 m3/second and the lowest of 128 m3/second. This river is the main waterway to connect Tuyen Quang with neighbouring provinces, allowing transportation of barges and ships with capacity of tens of tons in dry season and hundreds of tons in rainy season. The part of Gam River crossing Tuyen Quang is 170 kilometers long and is the waterway to connect Na Hang and Chiem Hoa districts with Tuyen Quang town. Pho Day River runs across the province with the length of 84 kilometers.
In addition, the province has a system of smaller rivers connecting with one another as a network by valleys of three main rivers. They supply water resources for domestic consumption and irrigation, and at the same time have great potentials for hydro-electricity development. There is presently a hydro-electricity plant in Gam River of Na Hang district with total capacity of 342 MW.
