With total natural area of 586,800 hectares, Tuyen Quang is among the medium size provinces in Viet Nam with average land area per capita of 0.87 hectare (as of 2004). The province owns quite fertile soil which creates favourable conditions for specialized growing of tea, sugar-cane, peanut for processing industry. Out of the total land area, 70,195 ha or 11.96% is agriculture land, 445,848 ha or 76.16% is forest land; 5,156 ha is residential land, and the left (i.e. 26,765 ha) is unused land.
The provincial land area is divided into the following main regions:
- The Northern upland region includes Na Hang district and upland communes of Chiem Hoa, Ham Yen and Yen Son districts with many high rock mountains. The region covers 50% of the total land area and is suitable for natural restoration and plantation of forests as well as development of agro-forestry.
- Low mountainous region includes Southern communes of Chiem Hoa, Ham Yen, Son Duong and Yen Son districts, which covers 40% of the total land area. Mountains and hills in this region are 10o to 25o sloping and suitable for perennial industrial trees as well as food and other annual cash crops.
- Hilly and valleyed region along Lo and Pho Day River includes Tuyen Quang town and the rest of Yen Son and Son Duong districts. This region covers 10% of the total land area. It is the main and focusing region for industrial production and development of big provincial socio-economic centres.
The province has great potentials for forestry development. By 2005, its forest cover has achieved 63%. There is a diversified plant system in the forests with total of hundreds of varieties of plants and trees. Tuyen Quang has 18 varieties of such rare plants and trees as: Agar Wood, Chukrasia Tabularis, Vatica Tonkinensis, Ferm-palm in lime-stone mountains, and Fokienia Hodginsii, etc.
According to the forestry inventory conducted in pursuant to the Directive No. 286/CT-TTg, wooden forests make up 2/3 of the total forest area in the province including Chukrasia Tabularis, Eucalyptus, Pine, Acacia, Styrax with the stock of 16,116,000 m3, out of which Acacia and Styrax have the biggest reserves of 550,000 - 650,000 m3 each, then Manglatia and Pine have the stock of 120,000 - 300,000 m3; There are about 66.5 billion Chukrasia Tabularis trees. In addition, Cinnamon forests with total area of proximately 4,000 hectares also provide high economic returns.
Mineral resources: According to reliable books issued in 1994 by the Bureau of Geology under the Ministry of Industry and other concerned agencies’ documents, Tuyen Quang treasures a total of 163 mines with 27 different kinds of minerals locating in all districts. Of which, iron, tin, mangan, lead, zinc and antimony have the highest reserves and quality. Basic information on reserve and quality of each mineral is summarized as below:
* Metal mines:
- Iron: Total of 17 iron ore sites have been discovered with an estimated reserve of 7 million tons. Of which, Phuc Ninh, Tan Tien, Cay Nhan (Yen Son district), and Cay Vau sites (Ham Yen district) treasure significant reserves of 2.4, 2.2, 0.5 and 1.5 million tons respectively.
- Tin: Tuyen Quang has discovered 12 tin ore sites and most of them are in Son Duong district. Total reserve is about 28,239 tons of SnO2.
- Mangan: There discovered 8 mine sites, most of which are in Chiem Hoa and Na Hang districts. Surveys have been conducted in 2 sites of Na Pet, Phieng Lang (Chiem Hoa district) whose reserves are estimated at above 2,416 million tons.
- Lead - Zinc: There are 24 mine sites in Tuyen Quang town, Yen Son, Son Duong, Chiem Hoa and Na Hang districts. Only 6 of them have been surveyed at estimated reserves at level C2 of 195,927 tons Pb Zn, with contents of Pb < 10%, Zn < 30%. Total forecasted reserve is at 1,590,000 tons of lead - metal zinc. Zinc ore is used to refine ZnO for chemical, light technology, medical purposes and metal zinc refining.
- Antimony: There discovered 15 sites with 10 in Chiem Hoa, 4 in Na Hang and 1 in Yen Son. Of which, 4 sites namely Khuon Phuc, Hoa Phu, Lang Vai, Coc Tay (Chiem Hoa district) have been surveyed with total reserves of 1.2 million tons.
* Non-metal mines:
- Barite: There are 24 sites discovered in Son Duong, Yen Son and Chiem Hoa districts. Of which, Ao Sen, Hang Luong, Thien Ke, Ngoi Thia, Dung Bung (Son Duong district); Lang Chanh, Xom Hoac, Xom Huc (Yen Son district) and Ha Vi (Chiem Hoa district) have been surveyed with total reserves of above 2 million tons. Most of them are open-cast and convenient for exploitation. This is a great potential for export.
- Limestone for construction: There are a lot of good quality limestone sites in Tuyen Quang. According to surveys conducted in 9 sites (in Trang Da commune of Tuyen Quang town), total capacity at level P2 is 783 million cubic meters with good quality. These sites are quite close by one another and therefore favourize big-scale and on-the-spot production of cements and construction materials.
- Kaolin - Fenspat: There are some scattered sites such as Hao Phu, Van Son (Son Duong district), Nghiem Son (Yen Son district). The biggest site is Dong Gianh mine (Son Duong district) containing 11 ore bodies and with reserve of 5 million tons. Kaolin mine site in Hao Phu (Son Duong district) is forecasted with estimated reserve of about 1.411 million tons. Reserve of kaolin mine site in Thai Son (Ham Yen district) is estimated at about 1.075 million tons.
- Mineral Water: There are 2 mineral water mines namely My Lam and Binh Ca. My Lam mine has a total reserve of 1,474; 492; and 248 cubic meters per day at level B, C1, C2 respectively.
In addition, Tuyen Quang also treasures a lot of other kinds of minerals including clay, lead, zinc, gold, sand, etc, which also provide good potentials for development of industrial zones in close attachment with raw materials region.
