Thanks to favorable soil and climate conditions for citrus cultivation, Tuyen Quang has designated three main citrus-growing districts: Ham Yen, Chiem Hoa, and Yen Son. In Xuan Van commune (Yen Son district), grapefruit cultivation has been developed in a focused and sustainable manner, with over 950 hectares of grapefruit, 88 hectares of orange, 12 hectares of custard apple, and 26 hectares of persimmon. The Xuan Van sugar grapefruit has been rated 3 stars under the OCOP program, while the Soi Ha Xuan Van grapefruit has received a geographical indication certificate from the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam and was named among the “Top 10 Famous Brands” by the Vietnam Consumer Association. Xuan Van seedless persimmon has also obtained a collective trademark certificate. In the 2024 season, nearly 8,000 Soi Ha grapefruits from local farmers were successfully exported to the UK, all meeting stringent quality standards. This milestone provides a strong foundation for expanding the brand and market reach of Tuyen Quang’s specialty fruits.
Ham Yen district, known as the "kingdom of Ham Yen orange," is famous for its fragrant, refreshing taste. The fruit has been recognized for years as a top-quality Vietnamese agricultural product. In 2020, it was granted a geographical indication certificate and awarded a 4-star OCOP rating. The district now has over 7,200 hectares of orange, nearly 80% of which is the local cam sành variety. Thanks to orange cultivation, thousands of households in Ham Yen have escaped poverty and improved their livelihoods.
Despite progress, challenges remain. The use of outdated local varieties, environmental concerns from overuse of fertilizers and pesticides, small-scale fragmented farming, and limited post-harvest processing continue to affect productivity and market competitiveness.
To address this, the province is promoting specialized cultivation zones, safe production standards (VietGAP, GlobalGAP, organic), digital pest monitoring systems, and better market linkages. Support policies for OCOP products, organic agriculture, and value-chain-based production are being actively implemented. With these efforts, Tuyen Quang aims to elevate its fruit sector toward higher quality, stronger branding, and sustainable growth.
