Hang carefully draws patterns from beewax fluid
Born into a family steeped in tradition, Hang grew up surrounded by the rhythmic hum of looms and the meticulous craft of her grandmother and mother, who skillfully embroidered vibrant patterns on indigo fabric. These early impressions became the seeds of her lifelong mission: To safeguard and pass on the unique cultural identity of her people.
For Hang, each traditional garment is more than a piece of clothing - it is a living story, a thread connecting generations, a visual narrative of the Dao Tien's history, customs, and spiritual life. Her hands, weathered yet steady, carefully apply melted beeswax to cloth, creating delicate, intricate designs that speak of a heritage stretching back centuries. "These clothes are not just for daily wear; they are a symbol of who we are", she says. "When my children wear these garments during festivals and special occasions, I want them to remember where they come from, to be proud of being Dao Tien".
Beyond her family, Hang has taken on the role of a cultural ambassador for her community. In 2023, when Hong Thai commune organized a workshop on beeswax painting and embroidery, she volunteered to teach, sharing not only her technical skills - how to select fabric, stretch the cloth, hold the needle, and apply beeswax evenly - but also the stories, meanings, and values embedded in each motif. Her classes were more than lessons in technique; they were a call to action for younger generations to cherish and protect their heritage.

Though the work is meticulous, time-consuming, and offers little financial reward, Hang’s commitment never wavers. “Preserving our culture may not bring immediate benefits, but it brings me joy and pride”, she says. “I want the next generation to love and nurture these traditions, to keep the Dao Tien culture alive for the future”.
In an era where modernization often overshadows tradition, Hang’s quiet dedication stands as a powerful reminder: Culture is not static; it is alive, passed from one hand to another, from one heart to the next. Her work is not just about preserving the past - it is about ensuring that the spirit of the Dao Tien continues to shine brightly, weaving a thread of identity, resilience, and pride through the generations.
