Tuyen Quang Chairman Receives UNESCO Revalidation Mission for Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark
Among those attending were Yuanyuan Zheng and Sanja Marija Plellis, the UNESCO-appointed revalidation experts, together with other members of the UNESCO revalidation mission. Representatives from relevant provincial departments and agencies also attended the meeting.
Welcoming the delegation, Chairman Phan Huy Ngoc thanked the experts for their commitment, dedication and professionalism throughout the revalidation mission, saying their assessment would provide a comprehensive review of Tuyen Quang's efforts to conserve its geological heritage, natural environment and cultural values while managing the geopark in line with UNESCO standards.
He described each revalidation as a valuable opportunity for the province to learn from international experience, embrace new approaches and continuously improve geopark management. UNESCO's recommendations, he said, have consistently served as an important reference for strengthening conservation, enhancing heritage management, promoting sustainable tourism and improving the livelihoods of local communities.
The Chairman stressed that retaining UNESCO Global Geopark designation is not a final destination but an ongoing process that requires long-term commitment from local authorities, active participation by communities and close cooperation with UNESCO and the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. Tuyen Quang will continue investing the necessary resources, fully implement UNESCO's recommendations and further strengthen the conservation, management and promotion of the geopark's outstanding values.
Sharing the preliminary observations from the revalidation mission, Yuanyuan Zheng, speaking on behalf of the expert team, commended the active involvement of provincial authorities and local communities in conserving geological heritage, preserving local cultural identity and supporting sustainable tourism.
The experts also recognised the province's effective promotion of the Dong Van Karst Plateau through a wide range of communication and outreach activities. They noted that Tuyen Quang's integrated approach to conserving, protecting and enhancing the values of the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark represents a good practice that could provide useful experience for other geoparks across the region.

Chairman of the Tuyen Quang Provincial People's Committee Phan Huy Ngoc presents a commemorative gift to the UNESCO revalidation mission
On the occasion, Chairman Phan Huy Ngoc expressed his hope that Yuanyuan Zheng and Sanja Marija Plellis would continue to support the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark by sharing international experience and best practices from geoparks around the world, while remaining close friends of Tuyen Quang as the province continues its development journey.
UNESCO carries out revalidation every four years to assess how UNESCO Global Geoparks conserve geological heritage, strengthen management and promote sustainable development. The outcome of the current revalidation will provide an important basis for UNESCO to consider the continued designation of the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark for the next four-year cycle.
